As many of you know, we spent last week in Panama City Beach, Florida for Bigstuf Camp. I wanted to give everyone a glimpse into what goes on at one of these camps (in case you didn't already know) so I give you a peek into my camp journal....
I'm not worried. I’m not stressed. I’m not upset because I really don’t think God is up in heaven sweating bullets over The DaVinci Code. The novel by Dan Brown and subsequent movie to be released this month are causing Christians to rally to their brainiest leaders and formulate a response to this work of fiction. The controversy surrounds some of the plot elements in the book that claim that the Catholic Church is engaged in covering up the marriage of Jesus to Mary Magdalene. The book raises very serious questions about some of the tenants of historical Christianity and the veracity (trustworthiness) of the church. Even though the book is in the fiction genre, the author claims that his research and conclusions are accurate. I bet I’ve seen a dozen church signs advertising some sort special DaVinci Code discussion in preparation for the coming release of the movie. I understand this need to defend historical Christianity, and I respect those who are reinforcing and re-stating what historians and scholars have validated through the years. This isn’t the first time that some in Hollywood have tried to raise questions about Jesus. Several years ago a movie called “The Last Temptation of Christ” stirred the same kind of response in the Christian community.
