It is about 824 degrees outside, so I thought I'd take a moment to offer my random thoughts for this week...

CLICK

If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out.  There is some language, but if you can get past that the movie is awesome.  I'd definitely recommend it.  Adam Sandler is his funny self, but there is a heavy side to this one.

WORLD CUP SOCCER

Generally, I'm a big sports fan.  I've watched a little bit of the World Cup and all I can really say is, MAN, those guys run ALOT!!  What's up with the soccer hooligans, though?  I mean I'm all about getting up for my team, but c'mon...do we really have to club each-other to death?  I've seen more civil behavior in a Mongolian death match.

WEEDS

I doubt many of you will find this interesting, but there is a weed in my yard that I have dubbed "super weed".  I have put every chemical known to man on that thing and it won't go away.  This weed grows faster than Bill Gates' bank balance.  I cut it down and by morning the thing is like 9" tall.  Somebody needs to study this weed and find out it's secrets.  Resistant to chemicals, grows overnight, seemingly invincible...sounds like some teenagers I've known.

4th OF JULY

We celebrate 230 years of freedom this week.  I don't think I remember a time when celebrating our country's independence was more important.  We are in the middle of some really hateful talk in America, and often we need to be reminded that our right to engage in such talk has been paid for by the blood of those who have gone before us. Maybe highlighting that fact will cause us to remember that talk is not and should never be cheap.

ON SPEAKING IN THE "MAIN SERVICE"

Dr. Foster asked me to speak in the main service this coming weekend.  I'm honored and humbled by the opportunity, but I'm very excited about doing it.  I can remember my first year at BCC, trying to imagine what it must be like to stand on that stage and speak to a world-wide audience.  I guess I'm about to find out.

VERONICA

OK, I don't mean to brag, but I am married to the hippest, coolest chick on the planet. She laughs at all my lame humor, ALWAYS talks to me, even when she's not happy.  In fact, she pretty much talks about every six seconds or so, whether anyone is there to hear her or not.  (which brings up an interesting question: If Veronica talks and nobody is there to hear her, does it make a sound..) She NEVER makes me sleep on the couch (although she might after she reads the "talking" riddle), cooks a mean meal and keeps a sparkling clean house.  All of this on top of the fact that she is a successful business woman.  How blessed am I??

IN THE NEWS

Did you guys hear about he asteroid that "almost collided with Earth"?  Hmmm...let's see, they say it was about as far from the Earth as the moon is...not sure that qualifies as "almost", but okay.

The space shuttle was supposed to launch, but was delayed because they found a crack in the foam on the big brown fuel tank.  Seriously, it makes me wonder what they have been doing all this time.  Wasn't the Columbia disaster caused by a piece of foam hitting one of the wings creating a hole?  I'm sure they know what they are doing.

If you haven't been paying attention to what is happening on the Gaza strip, it bears watching.  Palestinian militants kidnapped an Israeli soldier and are demanding that Israel release some 400 Palestinians from prison.  Israel has responded militarily and threatens to go even further, even threatening to kill Palestinian leaders.  I'm not sure that lasting peace is possible between Israel and Palestinians, which is very sad.

ENOUGH

OK, I think I've randomly mused enough for this week.  Hope everyone has a fantastic holiday and continues in the Grace of Christ.

Peace!

Jeff
