Achan Sinned (8.3)

God hates sin and punishes sin. Achan sinned in secret by stealing spoils from Jericho. God saw Achan’s sin; God had not gone with them in battle against Ai as a result, and 36 Israelites died. Achan’s punishment was death. The Bible says the wages of sin is death. (Rom. 6:23) But Jesus died on the cross so that we could be saved from spiritual death, and so we could be healed and made whole and right with God again. He loves us so much that he took the punishment for our sin to save us! Joshua 7

The Conquest of Jericho (8.2)

Who fought the battle of Jericho? God fought the battle and handed Jericho over to the Israelites. Joshua told the Israelites not to keep any of the spoil of Jericho for themselves—the Lord would provide for their needs. Thank God for providing for all of your needs, including the need to be rescued from sins by Jesus Christ. Joshua 2, Joshua 6

The Israelites Crossed the Jordan River (8.1)

The Israelites prepared to cross the Jordan River during flood season. Like the Red Sea crossing, by God’s great power, the Israelites crossed the Jordan River on dry ground. Joshua set up memorial stones to remember how God helped and sustained them. The cross is our reminder of what Jesus has done for us: a miraculous saving we could never do for ourselves.  Joshua 3, Joshua 4

Balaam (6.6)

Balaam was hired by the king to pronounce a curse on the Israelites. Balaam headed out, but his donkey kept stopping. After beating the donkey, Balaam heard the donkey speak. Shortly thereafter Balaam learned that he had no choice but to say what God wanted him to say and nothing else. Fourteen hundred years after Balaam foretold Jesus’ birth, wise men from the east came to visit the boy Jesus. Numbers 22, Numbers 23, Numbers 24

The Bronze Snake (6.5)

After much grumbling from the Israelites wandering in the desert, God sent poisonous snakes into their camp. God graciously gave them a way of escaping the consequences of the snake bite. Just like the Israelites were healed from the poisonous snake bites when they looked at the snake on the pole, those who look to Jesus on the cross and trust in Him will be saved from their sin.  Numbers 21:4-9
